Said to be a 16th century coaching inn the earliest surviving licensing records show Mrs Elizabeth Mather to be running the establishment from 1810 to 1822, followed by Thomas Livesley (1823 to 1828). In 1858 the Cheshire Agricultural Society and the Over Agricultural Society ran a joint show on the cricket field, followed by a dinner for 160 people at the Wheatsheaf. The dinner was held in a large tent in the rear garden.
