In the 1891 census the occupiers were Charles William Wood and his wife Mary Anne. They had only married in December 1890, both having been previously widowed. The licence returns show Mary Anne Burrows to be the licensee – Burrows was the name of her previous husband. This would suggest that she was the licensee before her second marriage. This former coaching inn had 4 stables with 10 stalls, and 6 beds for travellers. Refreshments could be provided for up to 60 persons. Said to be “a good house, much used by farmers &c.” Still in business the inn has been re-named Saxons.
