Title of Talk: Murgatroyd’s Brine Works
By Kerry Kerwin
Murgatroyd’s Brine Pumps are the last remaining part of what was a very large salt and chemical works in Middlewich. These pumps were last used in 1977 and when discovered some years ago were in a very poor state. Thanks to grants from English Heritage, the pumps have been subject to extensive renovation by volunteers from Middlewich Heritage Trust. This is a scheduled monument and is the last remaining brine pump in a hand dug shaft in Europe. The shaft was dug in 1889 by a team of 13 men from Winsford under the leadership Ralph Oakes. Kerry will take us through the history of the site and the ups and downs of the renovation programme.
