Title of Talk: Eyam the Plague Village
By Chris Green
The “Black Death” was the most fatal pandemic recorded in human history, causing the deaths of 75–200 million people in Europe. Chris will vividly recount the story of the arrival of the “Black Death” in Eyam and how the village chose to go into isolation so as to prevent infection spreading after bubonic plague was discovered there in 1665. The inhabitants of Eyam quarantined themselves, in a famous act of self-sacrifice, to prevent the spread of the plague to other local communities.
